Afternoon Tea Special

If I have learnt one thing about English culture, It's the importance of having tea, milk, sugar and honey at home at all times. Us Swedes tend to drink more coffee, but the English really like their tea.

One of my favourite things to do is to get all the girls together for a proper afternoon tea. Our favourite is at The Wolseley on Piccadilly, but also very much enjoy having afternoon tea at home, a bit cheaper and we can gossip about anything and everything without getting dirty looks from older ladies. With tea comes cakes and I really enjoy baking, so its an excellent opportunity to show off my skills without having to eat all of them myself.

Wedgwood - Cuckoo

There are two kinds of afternoon tea; the modern and the classic. I love those classic old beautiful cups with cute pattern and preferably a mismatched set from grandma's cupboards or a car boot sale.

But if you like me don't have any older relatives or don't have time to go trough lots of crap to find the perfect cups, I would recommend the "Cuckoo" series from Wedgewood. Mix and match, but you still have the theme of the beautiful birds. View products »

Pavina Double Wall Tea Glass, Set of 6

Pavina Double Wall Tea Glass, Set of 6

If you prefer to go more modern - á la trendy hotel; then I would recommend these "Pavina" - tea glasses from Bodum. A bit less grandma and a bit more modern minimalism. The double glass makes them not too hot to hold and gives it a cool illusion of floating tea.

Alessi Kettle

Alessi Kettle

In Sweden they are not so common, but in England every home has an electric kettle, sometimes two if it's a big flat share. They are so practical instead of boiling water in a pot, I can just flick the switch on the kettle and have hot water for tea a minute later. My favourite is this one from Alessi. It's stylish enough to be a part of my kitchen and soo very practical too.

Pillivuyt - 3-tiered Cake Stand

Pillivuyt - 3-tiered Cake Stand

You can't have afternoon tea without all the goodies, for which an oldfashioned cake tray is a must. I put finger sandwiches on the bottom, scones in the middle and all the yummy cakes on top. Traditionally you eat from the bottom up, but none will judge you if you do it the opposite way... It's a great opportunity to try out grandma's cookie recipes, but if there is a risk of you poisoning your guests, just buy some from the shop instead. It's allowed.

Eva Solo Glass Jar with Lid

Eva Solo - Glass Jar with Lid

Loose tea is soo much nicer than tea in a bag. I love to wander around tea shops, take in all the lovely aromas and try out new flavours. Store your tea in these matching jars from Eva Solo and leave them out to create a bit of a personal touch to an otherwise minimalist kitchen.

CafeSolo kaffebryggare, neopren, svart/lime

CafeSolo Coffee Maker

However if you have Swedish guests over then you really need to have a good coffee press. This is a fun version from Eva Solo and it keeps the coffee warm with neoprene cover. You are not allowed to serve guests instant coffee, it's a big no-no if you want them to come over again...

Simply Mjölkskummare

Stelton - Simply Milk Frother

If you, like me, don't have enough space in your kitchen for a coffee machine with a milk frother, then I recommend to get one to put in the cupboard. For us who loves a good latte, a good frother makes all the difference. My choice is this one from Stelton. A good coffee is one of the best everyday luxuries I can think of.

Eternal Champagneglas, 2-Pack, Klar

Eternal Champagne Flute, Set of 2

If you want to make your afternoon tea even more glamorous, go for its naughtier sister; The Champagne afternoon tea. On top of all the usual goodies, you also get a glass of champagne to wash it all down with. My girls tend to prefer this kind and I would love to be able to put these amazing champagne glasses with a vintage feel from Waterford in their hands.
