The iconic Danish company was established in 1904 by Danish metalworker Georg Jensen. Jensen began his career at the age of 14 as an apprentice to a goldsmith. He eventually began experimenting with silver jewellery and silver pieces, which led to the establishment of his company in Copenhagen.
He quickly developed a reputation as an exceptional and extremely original silversmith. His fame grew even larger after he was awarded a gold medal at the 1910 Brussels Exhibition. Jensen is known as one of the first designers to fashion cutlery using steel.
In 1919, Georg Jensen built its first factory building. Armed with its own manufacturing facility, Georg Jensen opened branches in major markets around Europe and North America, including London and New York.
After changing hands several times, the company is now owned by Investcorp, a Bahrain-based private equity firm.
Georg Jensen designs and manufacturers an exceptionally wide range of products including tableware, lamps, knives and serving accessories. However, its most famous range is Georg Jensen jewellery. It is widely acknowledged as the epitome of Scandinavian jewellery design. Its jewellery is characterised by original designs, clean lines, and outstanding craftsmanship.
It produces annual collections such as Magic, Halo and Curve, as well as customised and antique designs. The company also regularly draws into its rich heritage to inspire new designs. A wonderful example of this is the Jardinière 1505 centrepiece. Originally designed in 1915 by founder Georg Jensen, the Jardinière 1505 never went into production until its sketches were rediscovered in 2015. The company spent over six months to manually construct the hand-hammered sterling silver piece.
If you would like to own a piece of Georg Jensen jewellery, you can start with something small, such as the Moonlight Grapes Ring. Inspired by mother nature, the handmade silver ring boasts a beautiful, intricate motif. You may even consider the Bonbonniere chrome-plated confectionary bowl. Imagine the astonishment when you serve your guest chocolates using the Bonbonniere.
Another celebrated range is the Georg Jensen candlesticks. These finely crafted home décor accessories function as more than candleholders – they also serve as decorative pieces. Have you seen the Cobra Candle Holders Set? Made using mirror polished stainless steel, the entire piece seems to waver when a lighted candle is placed inside its receptacle.
With so much to choose from, you should be prepared to spend a few hours browsing through the collection of Georg Jensen.
