Mugs play a great role in our lives. Tea or coffee mugs are there for us in the morning, they are present during the day to keep up awake and they are also around when we crave a cup of hot chocolate or milk in the evening. They are irreplaceable – the taste and aroma of our favourite beverages will be different if we use other types of cups. This is the reason why every home has a set of mugs.

However, not all mugs are created equal. If you’re uncertain about which mug to get for your home, check out our overview of mug materials below – it will help you to find the ideal mug.

Glass Mugs

Glass mugs provide visual stimulation to drinkers – especially for frothy lattes. They also allow you to better gauge the right amount of milk and sugar to add to your beverage. In a way, they make beverages taste better. Our collection of glass mugs extends to over a hundred types.

If you’re looking for something basic, consider Sagaform’s Oak Glass Mug with Coaster. The 25 cl mug with ear handle sports a classic design and uses heat proof glass to insulate your hand from the blistering heat. It comes with a rustic wooden coaster to ensure no stains will mar your desk.

For something a bit more stylish, take a look at Bodum’s HAMBORD Coffee Glass Copper. The clear glass mug sits inside a gold or chrome-coloured frame, giving it an air of sophistication.

Porcelain Mugs

Porcelain mugs have always been held in great esteem owing to their versatility, durability and timeless design. Regardless of whether you prefer the classic all-white porcelain or a hand-painted finish, you’ll rarely go wrong with your selection.

However, if you need a helping hand, the Iittala Taika Siimes Mug is an excellent place to start. The 40 cl mug, designed by award-winning Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi, features a vibrant and colourful décor that will give your table a fresh, vigorous boost. Arabia’s 6-piece Moomin Mini Mugs are another popular choice. They have a playful, cartoon finish that will bring a smile to your face.

Ceramic Stoneware

One of the great attractions of stoneware mugs is their dense and nonporous nature. Since stoneware doesn’t absorb liquids or coffee or tea particles, the residue will linger inside the cup. This will imbue your beverage with a deeper flavour. They are particularly trendy with tea drinkers. If you would like to add a little rustic touch to your home, Marimekko’s Ketunmarja Mug might just be what the doctor ordered. Designed by the illustrator and design team of Sami Ruotsalainen and Aino-Maija Metsola, the mug features a lovely hand painting of a fox and bird in a forest. You may also want to give the Astrid Lindgren Mug a look. The green mug features engraved quotes from the fictional character.

Stainless Steel Mugs

We use steel for practically everything else, so why not mugs too? They look great, are easy to clean and retain heat well (courtesy of added insulation). Stelton’s 20 cl To Go Click Mugg and Rosendahl Copenhagen’s 40 cl Grand Cru Thermal Mug are prime examples of this.

Armed with this new-found knowledge, you must be raring to start shopping for a new set of mugs. Well, don’t let us keep you waiting!
