A sun lounger is an adjustable reclining chair for outdoor use. It allows users the option of either sitting down or lying down horizontally. This gives users the freedom to read, take a nap, have a conversation or sip a fruity cocktail from one spot.
Pool or garden sun loungers are made from a variety of materials. The most common materials used, though, are wood, metal and plastic. Each material has its own advantages and drawbacks. Choosing the right type of sun lounger can ensure a relaxing and enjoyable summer.
The primary factor you should consider when selecting one is the location. If you’re planning on placing it on the patio, then you can choose wooden loungers – even those covered with extensive fabric. Rain and moisture can quickly damage wood, so a sheltered location will prevent them from being exposed.
If they are going to be placed by the pool or under the open sky, then try to pick metal or plastic loungers – ideally with weather-resistant fabric (or plastic); they are resistant to harsh climes. However, keep in mind that paint is not permanent. At some point, you may need to repaint your loungers to extend their longevity.
Another factor to consider is the size, especially if you’re planning to buy more than a single unit. Sun loungers vary sharply in size, so you may need to dig out the old measuring tape to ensure they will fit comfortably on your patio, garden or poolside.
You may even consider getting tarpaulins to cover your deck chairs when not in use. Even if it is not raining, the tarp will block your deckchairs from being exposed to the sun, around the clock. Be mindful of the colours, though – you don’t want to upset the existing décor of your home with garishly coloured tarps.
Sun loungers can generally be divided into three categories: deck chairs, sunbeds and recliners.
Deck chairs are basically chairs that have adjustable backs, and sometimes, footrests. They generally consist of a wooden or metal frame with some sort of fabric stretched over them. Some dispense with fabric completely and use alternative materials such as PVC or cushions.
An excellent example of this is Fiam’s Linda Deck Chair. The frame is made from the very durable Robinia wood. The treated wood starts off in bright colour, but like teakwood, the shade will become gradually darker after being exposed to the elements for a few months. For your comfort, the seat, armrest and back are covered with an equally durable white fabric.
Another model from Fiam, the Fiesta Soft Deck Chair, has a light yet sturdy aluminium frame. It has padded cushions covered with synthetic Dralon fabric to ensure you remain comfortable for hours on end. The model is also foldable, so you can easily bring it along to the beach or barbeque. Talk about multifunctional furniture!
The Spaghetti Deck Chair is another option to consider. Also made from aluminium, the lounger uses PVC strings instead of fabric for added buoyancy. It also comes with an adjustable footrest – an important feature during afternoon naps.
The second type of lounger is the sunbed. As the name implies, it is basically an outdoor bed which you can lie or sleep on. It is usually well-padded to ensure lasting comfort. Sunbeds also have stronger frames and are generally less mobile. But that’s fine, since they are not designed with mobility in mind.
The final type of lounger is the recliner. Recliners are the fully adjustable version of sunbeds that are designed to fit the contours of your body. The ergonomic design provides more comfort to the body even with prolonged use. The armrests and footrest are adjustable, and the entire frame can typically be folded.
