The Story of Marimekko

Marimekko is a Finnish design company recognized globally for its bold colors and original patterns. Since the 1950s, the brand has created products that inspire creativity and joy in everyday life – from textiles and home décor to clothing, bags, accessories, and colorful kitchenware.

The story begins with Printex, a textile company acquired by Viljo Ratia, whose wife Armi Ratia laid the foundation for what would become Marimekko. Armi Ratia, a trained textile designer, originally intended to open her own workshop for oilcloths. When sales did not go as planned, she instead began creating modern textiles and clothing with a focus on creativity and quality. The project was named Marimekko, inspired by Mari’s dress, and the first collection consisted of beautiful, playful dresses.

In the following years, Marimekko expanded rapidly. The first store opened in Finland in the 1950s and became a pioneer in offering modern design with bold patterns to a wider audience. Soon stores followed in Sweden, and later in Europe and the USA. Today, Marimekko is represented in over 40 countries, with around 170 stores and customers in 39 countries via its online shop.

One of the most iconic patterns of all time is Unikko, the poppy design by Maija Isola, symbolizing the brand’s playful and colorful expression. Over the years, many prominent designers have left their mark on Marimekko, including Vuokko Nurmesniemi and Annika Rimala, together building a legacy of creativity, courage, and timeless aesthetics.

Marimekko is more than design – it is a celebration of color, form, and personal expression. Each product tells a story of bold ideas, timeless design, and inspiration that brings joy to homes and everyday life around the world.
